1614 Washington Ave.
A Knoxville cottage from which a number of photographs are shown. While the upstairs rooms are low at the sides (5 feet) they are excellent sleeping rooms and as serviceable as if 2 full stories. The lower floor is as fine an arrangement as can be imagined, as the photos will show. The stairs are case in, in order to prevent the escape of heat upward, in case it is desired to heat with stoves or grates. An open staircase can be put in with excellent effect. Water is used for heating. The entire first floor except kitchen is finished in quartered oak and is beautiful. The entire house is sheathed and papered, slate roof and double floors. Size 48 x 52. Stories 10 feet 6 inches and 9 feet. Regarding the porch, veranda or piazza, as it is called, America can almost claim priority of invention. At any rate it has become a national emblem of American Architecture. It is the place where we live on the outside of the house; a veritable dwelling place with floors and roofs, but neither walls, windows, nor doors. It is a beautifying character of every home when properly designed. On the other hand, it may make hideous every other feature of an otherwise beautiful building. Then let us look well to the porch; to its plan for artistic effect and design and its spaciousness and arrangement for convenience. They all lend to its usefulness and beauty. A furnished porch for a day's entertainment-how varied the possibilities, how beautiful the effect and what healthful pleasure it affords! To furnish a porch, nothing permanent is anticipated; simply remove articles from within the house for the occasion.
