This 3-bay commercial building is a spot on match for Barber’s design no. 68, from the 1891 “Cottage Souvenir No. 2” pattern book. Although altered along the front face of the ground floor, this building’s exterior is fairly intact.
This building continues to serve as a bank, although I do not know how historically intact the interior is. Perhaps someone in the Greenville area would like to visit this gem and shoot some photos of the interior? If so, please be aware that because this is a functioning bank building, I am sure that permission would need to be obtained from the management, before any such photos could be taken.
Sadly, after initially surviving Hurricane Katrina, the Edmund Kells residence caught fire and burned from the surge that occurred when electrical power was returned to the lines.
Another stunning contemporary example of Barber’s Design no. 1, from the 1891 “Cottage Souvenir No. 2” pattern book. I have been fortunate enough to see the interior of the Connors residence and it is as stunning as the exterior. Bob really outdid himself when he built this gem.
Mike and Carolyn have done a magnificent job, accurately creating a new version of this signature Barber design. So much so, that it was featured in two recent Hollywood movies. Check out “The Blind Side” or “Hall Pass” to see this home on the big screen. The Dufano residence is a real tribute to the architecture of George Barber.
The James Robinson residence is an example of Barber’s design 01, from the third edition (1901) of the “Modern Dwellings” series of pattern books.
The Joseph Binford residence was lost to fire, I believe in the 1960’s.
